National Gardening Association Grants

The National Gardening Association (NGA) supports programs across the country that actively engage kids in the garden and improve the quality of life for all.  To be eligible for most of these grants, applicants must plan to garden with at least 15 kids between the ages of 3 and 18.  Your school or organization may apply for more than one grant.  For more information, visit the NGA website or call 800-538-7476.

Resources on plastics recycling available

The American Plastics Council has several resources on plastics recycling available including:

  • "All Plastic Bottle" - answers to common questions about all plastic bottle recovery programs.  A web site is also available www.allplasticbottles.org.

  • Plastic Film Recovery Guide - a guide designed to help businesses, recyclers and local governments evaluate opportunities for recovering plastic films for recycling.

  • A complete listing of more than 1,500 products made from recycled plastics - everything from garden and landscape to building and construction products.

  • A summary report on plastics recovered from residential electrical and electronics equipment.

Tree Planting Resource Kit

Thanks to funding from Toyota, one copy of the Tree Planting Resource Kit for Volunteers is available free of charge to organizations and communities to assist in volunteer tree-planting efforts. The kit includes a leadership guide, reproducible packet, Arbor Day guidebook and video. It assists in providing specific advice and information on the best way to plant trees as well as tips on how to motivate and inspire volunteers.

KU Residential Recycling Drop-Off

In order to better serve KU students, faculty, and staff, KU Recycling will have recycling trailers available to drop off your recyclables from home. Trailers will be parked east of Memorial Stadium from 10 AM to 4 PM on the following Saturdays:

February 25
March 18
April 29
May 27

Materials must be sorted according the KU Recycling guidelines, which differ slightly from curbside services and community recycling centers. Click here for details.

Get Caught Recycling 

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has launched a new marketing campaign including many prominent Kansans. The goal is to reinforce the recycling behavior of Kansans who currently recycle and encourage those who don't recycle to join. KDHE plans to share its message, along with program materials, to other state and local recycling programs.

The Pollution Prevention Award is presented by KDHE annually to individuals, communities, businesses and industries who have made a significant impact in protecting our environment by preventing pollution. eBay E-Recycling Effort

eBay has created a recycling initiative, called Rethink, promoting the reuse, recycling and donation of old computers. The website, http://rethink.ebay.com/, shows consumers and businesses how to properly get rid of old electronic equipment. It promotes reuse and recycling, facilitating the selling and donating of working computers by offering tools to aid selling and including a safe data destruction utility. The initiative also provides information on third-party companies that can pick up computer systems and peripherals and sell them on behalf of the owners. Another directory helps businesses find a local asset recovery specialist to handle the disposition of multiple computer systems.

Numerous electronics companies are members of the program, including Intel Corp., Apple Computer Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co., along with other participants, including the U.S. Postal Service.

Office Depot Offers Free Recycling

Office Depot has partnered with the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corp. to offer free cell phone and battery recycling at all of its North American locations.  The company will accept outdated cell phones as well as rechargeable batteries used in various portable electronic devices.  The types of batteries accepted include nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride, lithium ion and small sealed lead rechargeable batteries weighing less than 2 pounds.

Aluminum Recycling Fun Facts

  • Some 127,093 cans are recycled every minute nationwide

  • According to the US EPA, aluminum cans represent less than one half of one percent (0.4 percent) of the nation's solid waste stream.

  • It is estimated that since 1972, some 17 million tons of aluminum cans have been recycled.  These 852.4 billion aluminum cans placed end to end would stretch to the moon more than 270 times.

Vehicles being accepted as donations

The American Lung Association of Kansas is accepting donations of used vehicles. Those donating their vehicles are eligible for a tax deduction equivalent to the vehicle's current value. The donations help to fund the associations various programs. To donate a vehicle call 1-800-577-LUNG (5864).

The National Kidney Foundation is also accepting donations of cars, vans, trucks or boats.  Proceeds from Kidney Cars help fund research, professional education, public health education and patient and community services.   Kidney Cars offers nationwide, year-round pick-up service. Simply call 1-800-488-CARS and give them the information about your vehicle.

Rock Springs 4-H Center is accepting donations of good vehicles including cars, vans, trucks, A.T.V.'s, tractors and golf carts which can be used to serve the conference center's needs.  If you have a vehicle you would like to donate to Rock Springs and the Kansas 4-H Foundation please call 785-257-3221.  Arrangements can be made to pick up your vehicle and donations to the center may be tax deductible.

Donated Vehicles support public television

KTWU/Channel 11 has joined forces with Vehicles for Charity, a non-profit organization based in Denver.  Vehicles for Charity arranges for the vehicle to be picked up and delivered to an automobile auction service to be sold.  Proceeds from donated vehicles benefit KTWU and developmentally disabled citizens.  If you have a vehicle you would like to donate, call 800-833-3006 (be sure to mention KTWU) or visit ktwu.washburn.edu/vehicles/  for more information.

Hewlett-Packard computer recycling

Hewlett-Packard Company now offers consumers and businesses a way to recycle unwanted computers and equipment from any manufacturer.

HP's Planet Partners Program includes pick-up, transportation, evaluation for reuse or donation, and environmentally sound recycling for products from PCs and printers to servers and scanners.

Toshiba America Information Systems Inc.

A new free computer take-back program was announced March 6, 2007.  The company will recycle its notebook computers at no cost to the consumer with no obligation to buy a new Toshiba computer.  It will also take back other brands of notebook computers for the cost of shipping.

On-line equipment exchange

The Kansas City Surplus Exchange offers an on-line listing of equipment available to be donated or for sale to non-profit organizations and schools. Businesses with furniture or equipment they no longer need or want, but is still useful can be donated to The Surplus Exchange, Inc. Those pieces of furniture and equipment are then available to not-for-profit organizations and schools to purchase at lower cost than new items. The on-line exchange can be found at www.surplusexchange.org under Merchandise.

Ceiling tile recycling program

Armstrong World Industries has re-launched its ceiling tile recycling program.  Business owners interested in the program should contact Armstrong to verify that their tiles can be recycled.  For more information call 1-800-ARMSTRONG or visit the website.  Armstrong pays freight costs for shipping the old ceilings (30,000-square-foot minimum).  Contact Armstrong Techline for details specific to your area bpotechline@armstrong.com.

This website features a directory of e-mail lists, organized by city, for individuals who are interested in either giving away a usable, but unwanted, item or finding something they need for free.  The FreeCycle site provides a brief overview of how it works, a listing of cities that have a FreeCycle list that you can join and instructions on how to start a new FreeCycle list.

Donate Vehicles for TARC

TARC, Inc. has entered into a new business venture with the "Vehicles for Charity Donation Program."  TARC, Inc. will accept donated vehicles (cars, motorcycles, RV's, boats) that they will then sell at public auction.  The donator is allowed a tax write-off for the value of the vehicle and TARC, Inc. receives 75% of the profit generated from the sale of the vehicle.  For more information call 1-866-628-2277, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m.  You can also visit TARC's website, www.TARCInc.org
